THE LEADER
DeWayne Jones :
Trumpet/Flugelhorn and Vocals
Bandleader and performer, DeWayne Jones, has been performing in and around the Baltimore and Washington area since the late 1970's. This exceptionally talented player excels at both contemporary and classical trumpet styles. DeWayne remembers his earliest jam sessions at the Bird Cage on North Avenue in Baltimore , Maryland with the late Mickey Fields and at the Pig Foot on Rhode Island Avenue in Washington D.C. with the late Bill Harris. Mr. Jones honed his craft in these now defunct institutions of music.

Mr.
Jones has performed with such local greats as Ruby
Glover, John Lampkin, Gary Bartz, Parris Lane, Gary
Thomas, the late Albert Daley, Kim Waters, Cyrus
Chestnut, Charlie Covington, and Whit and Tommy
Williams to name a few. He has also performed with
such world-renowned musicians as The Harper
Brothers, Buster Williams, Keeter Betts,
Mel
ba Moore, Wallace Roney and Bobby Watson.
Mr.
Jones studied music at
Bowie
State
University
with Michael Neal, a well-known trumpeter, who is a
protégé of Jazz Trumpeter Donald Byrd of Art
Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. DeWayne later
studied at
Baltimore
's
Towson
State
University
under the tutelage of Composer, Musician, and
Conductor, Hank Levy, formally of Stan Getz fame. In
addition Mr. Jones continued private study with
teacher and mentor Dr. Thomas Dalaine. After
enlistment in the U.S. Army in January of 1983, Mr.
Jones attended the U.S. Army School of Music in
Norfolk
,
Virginia
where he gained valuable experience playing for the
U.S. Army Bands Program and part-time with a Latin
Salsa Band while stationed in
Stuttgart
,
West Germany
. During this period Mr. Jones developed the ability
to play many different styles of music from Jazz,
Blues, Salsa, Classical, Pop and R&B. After
leaving active duty in 1989, Mr. Jones joined the
Maryland National Guard's 229th Army Band. During
his six years in the 229th, Mr. Jones performed for
such well know dignitaries as Baltimore Mayor, Kurt
Schmoke, Maryland Governor, William Donald Schaefer
and President George Bush as part of a celebration
for the end of the Gulf War. In addition, he had the
privilege of performing in
Normandy
,
France
for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day.
